Terry Angel Mason (An In-depth Interview)

Published on: 29th October, 2009

Name: Terry Angel Mason
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Los Angeles, CA
Current Residence: I reside both in San Diego and Los Angeles

I actually began writing when I was about eight years of age. I couldn't express my feelings to my family or friends about the growing awareness in me that I was a same-gender loving person and so I would write songs about my feelings and experiences. I still continue to do so even to this day and will be releasing a Christmas CD in December 2010 that contains both Christmas songs and love songs that I have composed... ...CLICK HERE TO READ ENTIRE ARTICLE

The intersection of race, religion and sexuality has always been a sensitive spot, and the black church in particular has come under fire for preaching anti-gay messages. But according to Mason, gays in the black church must increasingly defy the unspoken "don't ask, don't tell" rule to show how those messages affect the community. "We're not going to hide anymore," Mason said. "I think this is a time of revolution like no other." (click here to read entire article...)

More black churches respond to HIV/AIDS
by Joseph Erbentraut
Friday, June 18, 2010

Though progress has been made, resistance remains for some black clergy considering a more active stance on HIV and other LGBT-associated issues. Many advocates point to this reluctance as major contributing factor to the stigma HIV/AIDS continues to hold for many people of color.

Terry Angel Mason, a Los Angeles-based AIDS activist and author, said, while encouraged, he hoped more black clergy would "practice what they preach" in supporting LGBT people.

"I see many churches say they want to help reach 'these people' but when they really get into the trenches, they still get hung up by the whole 'gay' ideology, that the virus is a gay epidemic," said Mason. "But the reason we are facing this epidemic today is because we refused to believe we had gay folks in the church in the first place. There are thousands of us. What is it with the African American church not wanting to deal with life as it is?" Mason asked. "They have refused to embrace advocacy. It has killed us and it is killing us."(Read entire article by clicking here or on photo above)

ANOTHER VIEW OF ANGELS IN AMERICA
Syd Rushing, a (former) noted journalist for the San Diego Update Newspaper, in an article said this about Mason:

For the fourth time in two months, I have experienced Terry "Angel" Mason's restorative prayers to heal the edges of my relationship, to anchor prosperity into my life, and to form an SOS call to any neighboring angels. Many would go so far as to say Mason is a Maverick of an angel since his life reads like an excerpt from Tony Kushner's Angels in America. He has a momentous quest, having overcome two life threatening-illnesses.
Be forewarned with a note of caution that Mason's prayers are liable to put pep in your step, a zip to your hips, and a song in any emotionally burned out heart.
His ministry is one of life doctor, musicologist,
and activist of spirit!

I have finished reading "Love Won't Let Me Be Silent". I thoroughly enjoyed it! I didn't realize that this work is somewhat autobiographical about your personal self discovery through key events in your life. Although homosexuality was the vehicle for telling the story, to me your "coming out" was not the real story.

The battles you've faced on many fronts represent the fabric of this book to me. Your battle against racial discrimination by whites both gay and straight, the discrimination you've faced by conservative and closed minded blacks, understanding your spiritual gifts and how to use them, and how to live and love in a same-gender relationship. It is beautiful that you found the answer to your life's many challenges through your belief in Christ Jesus.

As I mentioned in a previous message, my favorite topic was about love. Finding you are worthy of love. Finding what love means to you, Finding how to love yourself and finding that special person to love. Seems to me that any of the
chapters about the topic of love could be expanded into a complete book. I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity to read your book, to better understand some of the key moments in your life that shaped your opinions and mold you into the thoughtful and insightful person that you have obviously become.

Love Won't Let Me Be Silent is becoming the most talked about book in America among God-fearing, same-gender-loving people, their families and friends. In perfect prose, it bridges the man-made gaps between religion, race and politics; then offers love-based solutions to any and all problems plaguing our communities. I am changed after reading it and I know you will be too!

Terry Angel Mason's book is a beautiful reflection of his positive energy and amazing resilience. Mason challenges societal bias, but without accusation of individuals- instead, he invites change through the sharing of stories. It is open and passionate, full of encouragement and triumph for those who share any of the author's experiences, yet is still very accessible to anyone else who has ever loved and felt so strongly for someone that love simply wouldn't let them be silent.

If M.L.K. had a Protege...

Out of every struggle for Equal Rights, 1 powerful voice comes forth alone & represents millions to stand up for the basic rights for every human being. Finally, today's generation has receives their just do. Author, Terry Angel Mason has beautifully chronicled the events that have shaped & molded his reality as not just a Black Gay man in America but also a Christian. I innocently picked it up thinking it was going to be a steamy love story because of the cover art. Much to my dismay, from the Introduction I was encouraged not to be silent about my juxtoposition in our coutry anymore simply because I am uniquely made! Thank you Mr. Mason for sharing his truths, triumphs & troubles concerning Gay Love & Life in a sincerely wise, profound book of messages that echoes Gandhi, Martin Luther King & Nelson Mandela.

You inspire us all, from the nooks and crannies of the hood to the never ending skies above the hilltops. We are blessed that God has given you the talent and voice to influence and encourage the WORLD. Here at Affinity we have decided to have a reading group & discussion with members beyond the Leadership Institute, around the end of September. -- Much Luv, Peace, & Prosperity!

Mason masterfully tackles the intersection of race & homophobia in "Love Won't Let Me Be Silent" while simultaneosuly challenging heterosexual privilege; leaving the reader with a profound sense of self-worth whereas before it may have been in question. If black men loving other black men is considered a revolutionary act, then Mason provides a blueprint to love God, yourself, and ultimately the man of your choosing boldly and without reservation in "Love Won't Let Me Be Silent".

Love Wont Let Me Be Silent by Terry Angel Mason is a great speaker and advocate for HIV/AIDS. He has writen several books. Love wont let me be silent looks into HIV/AIDS from a person who is African American and is from the African American Community. This book is from a person who was very sick with the virus and came back. We love Terry and his book. from Elton Stovell, Program Director NHA Case Management and Peer support Services.

Getting kids to understand gay and lesbian issues is something few ever try as the possible outcome can be confusing at most. In our American society with so many anti-gay attitudes, it may be difficult to teach our children to respect homosexuals as human beings. The facts are that homosexuals are part of our society, children must understand the issues in a non-judgmental way. The book, "Love Won't Let Me Be Silent gives you useful suggestions to help you to foster that understanding with kids...

I read the book and was inspired to say the least. I am among the many who have left the church due to the sheer ignorance and lack of compassion I encountered regarding my sexuality. I admire the manner in which Angel Mason reconciled his spirituality/sexuality without compromising his faith! It is truly an inspired lesson for one and all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!, July 24, 2009
From the cover art, I opened it up thinking it was going to be just another Gay Romance novel. I have never been so wrong in my entire life! From reading the Intro alone, I was submerged into a brilliant body of prose, poetry & parables perfectly woven together, unlike anything out now regrading mine or anyone's Gay experience in America! The author's take & position on California's Prop 8- compelling! His revelations on Gay love & relationships left me breathless. Mason shares sincere stories of triumphs that ALL would find uplifting & encouraging. I challenge any man or woman regrdless of sexual orientation, race or class to read & learn just why, "Love Won't Let Me Be Silent" either anymore!
